Black Mamba Snakes are cold blooded reptiles with the unusual ability of regulating their body temperature to suit the climate or location they inhabit. Around the world, snakes may be defined in two categories: venomous or non-venomous.
Black Mamba snakes, native to Africa, fall into the latter category. They are most feared because of their aggression, speed and deadly venom. Known to attack without warning, the Black Mamba may be found in hot, tropical climates. They can grow up to 14 feet long, making them the second largest snake in the world after the King Cobra.
The Black Mamba takes its name from its jet black mouth, not its gray to greenish-yellow scales. This black mouth is easily identified and differentiates the species from any other member of the snake family.
The odds do not favour those who have suffered a bite from the Black Mamba. Its victims experience loss of muscle control, double vision, nausea, severe stomach pains, paralysis, and death. The venom from its bite travels rapidly through its victims, and without immediate medical attention and administration of anti-venom, the mortality rate in humans is 100%.
With its well-earned reputation for aggression, the Black Mamba is considered to be one of the most venomous reptiles in the world.
